Why Marijuana Detox is Important

A popular street drug today is marijuana. Marijuana also known as cannabis contains a chemical substance known as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. It is so common that most jobs and other agencies require testing for THC before employment or other services. Although not thought to be dangerous it can lead to addictions to harder drugs like crack or heroin. To avoid such addictions in the future it is important to seek treatment for marijuana use and go through a marijuana detox program.

Street Names

Marijuana can be home grown and goes by many different names. Popular names include; weed, MJ, pot, reefer, dope, ganja, grass, the street names are endless. Although smoked on it’s own it can be combined with other harder drugs such as cocaine or even heroin. This can be very dangerous and lead to further health complications.

Side Effects

One of the main side effects of marijuana is the euphoric high that it creates for the user. However, if a bad batch of marijuana is imbibed it can create a high level of anxiety and paranoia in the user. Although mild compared to harder drugs, they are still side effects and need to be taken seriously. Long term marijuana use is believed to increase the instances of depressive disorders such as bipolar disorder. It is also believed to affect the memory over time.

Treatment Programs

There are programs that focus on treating those who abuse marijuana. Marijuana, although a drug, does not have addictive qualities. However, the need to get high can be addictive; this is why programs are in place. Marijuana treatment and detox may not feature the usual physical detoxification signs, but is still very difficult to go through.

Counseling

In conjunction with marijuana treatment is counseling. Counseling is an important factor in any substance abuse recovery. It allows the user to explore the reasons for the drug use and find different ways to cope with the urge to abuse drugs as well as the reasons for the drug abuse in the first place. This is a very important part of recovery and should be continued throughout ones life in order to prevent further addiction.

Continuing Recovery

Once treatment is completed it is important for the recovering drug user to find aftercare. This way the recovery process can continue. Aftercare also provides a support system and aids the recovering user in overcoming the urge to abuse marijuana and get high. It allows them to continue there recovery in a non-residential treatment environment.

There is much debate in the United States concerning marijuana use. Many states have legalized the use of marijuana for medical purposes, which has sparked the debate of whether or not marijuana should be legalized. Whether it’s legal or not marijuana can still be abused. Because of this it is important that there be drug treatment program centers in place to handle marijuana detox.
